Scorpiono’s 1 question interview with Collis from Envato

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

The previous post was a video from Envato with Collis and Cyan which I salute again.

I had one BIG question for them which was never asked in the interview, so I emailed Collis (yes, he’s a nice guy and he replied).

Scorpiono:

I have watched the interview, fantastic, one question buzzes in my mind, I’d love to post it to my blog:

Where do you usually spot the content writers for new sites (which forums/HR sites) ?

Collis:

Hey Sergiu,
Thanks for the email!  In answer to your question, I typically find them via the FreelanceSwitch job board or sometimes we just have an open contributor email address or form (e.g. on Tuts+ anyone can submit a tutorial) and sometimes these people go on to be regular contributors,
Hope that helps!

Thanks
Collis

Interviewed by Scorpiono

Today’s interview is about a fantastic guy from India I had the oportunity to take an interview thanks to digitalpoint forums where most of the big guys still hang out.

Ashish is a 25 year old male from India which started clickbank in early 2008, so not that far away, but has risen up very high in such a short period. He now makes an easy $x,xxx USD per month and his profits are growing each month. We’ll have the standard questions about Ashish and then we go into the non-formal questions about clickbank and clickbank success.

Ashish says:
10-12 hours a day

I clearly remember, I joined clickbank on 14th June, 2008 and got my first sale after around 1 month on 21st July 2008

Ashish says:
It was a client visit in our office and we were busy with him… When i came home after client left , I checked my CB account and saw the first sale of $29.73

$corpiono says:
Haha, a good amount for a first sale if you’d ask me

Ashish says:
I called up my partner and told him about the first sale.. It was really an amazing moment for me… as before that i was fully involved with SEO Projects and i used to think that i will move into Affiliate Marketing whole heartedly after the first sale

$corpiono says:
What was the product ?

Ashish says:
It was some blogging Guide

Ashish says:
I have got only 3 sales of that product so far

$corpiono says:
So basically how would you describe a CB work, from picking the product to method of driving traffic you most like, talk a bit about this in big lines.

Ashish says:
I think If you want to move into CB, you can be successful into any niche. First thing that involves is Extensive Keyword research, If you manage to find good keywords that has less competition and decent hits. By targeting those keywords, One can surely get good earning

It’s a subscription based tool access

Ashish says:
ok… i have not tried.. will check surely..

$corpiono says:
Google Adwords seems to be a good option to promote the products directly on their home page, or you have a landing page which eventually lands on the product?

Ashish says:
Yes i use landing pages only… but before starting to promote the product, i try direct linking, Just to give a try. how well the product converts

$corpiono says:
Can you show us a landing page?

Ashish says:
I use wordpress blogs as landing page, though i have some simple design sites also

Ashish says:

$corpiono says:

Ashish says:
Its mine… I am not using this page as it was nuked by google but this is good example of my landing page

$corpiono says:
So you usually go into arbitrage adwords and SEO

Ashish says:
Mostly SEO, I started PPC last month only…

$corpiono says:
What’s the biggest profit you have earned, in one month

Ashish says:
Though i have other sources of earning also but from CB alone It is $5800 for the month of Jan

$corpiono says:
Do you have a certain niche you like to target?

Ashish says:
better landing pages, more traffic, more products and last month i released my first CB Product

Ashish says:
No certain niche..I am targeting more than 15 niches

Ashish says:
I am planning to target at least 50 products by the end of March

$corpiono says:
I see..

$corpiono says:
What forums do you frequent?

Ashish says:
Digitalpoint, warriorforum and ewealth

$corpiono says:
Do you buy/sell domains ?

Ashish says:
no i don’t deal in domain selling

$corpiono says:
What’s the future of being a guru in affiliate marketing in your opinion? Just more niches to tap or.. something else?

Ashish says:
I think What makes a guru, a real guru is Optin List… I have started building my list now… along with this I am going to release my second product as a publisher

Ashish says:
but that would take at least 2-3 months

$corpiono says:
Is it hard to integrate a product with clickbank?

Ashish says:
No its real easy task

$corpiono says:
Do you expect to earn more by having your own product than by promoting others in the future?

Ashish says:
yes, I am planning to have a consistent income first then will come fully into Publishing

Ashish says:
as my sites/blogs will be giving steady income from organic traffic

Ashish says:
after a certain time

$corpiono says:
Perfect

$corpiono says:
An ending message for our visitors

$corpiono says:
Something you advise them to do with clickbank in the start ups

Ashish says:
this is most difficult task.. ok writing

Ashish says:
Guys, If you are planning to come into Affiliate Marketing, Keep on trying, don’t give up. Initially it may have a lot of efforts but once you start getting decent traffic,I am sure you will get success. Interview with my buddy Matthew Kammerer

Monday, January 26th, 2009

BuildInternet.com got ahead of me and took Matthew an interview, he’s a buddy of mine, similar age so his story is about success at a young age.

Big fish: TearaBite – grownupgeek.com

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

I would like to thank Randy (TearaBite) for allowing me to take him an interview. DigitalPoint seem to still have a solution for things, and I have found it. It will be an interview about grownupgeek.com – featured on Google Adsense success stories – and everything that comes with the whole online business.

Nickname: Tearabite / The Firefox Referral King

Name: Randy Brown

Age: 41

Sex: Not enough

Location: Southern California, USA

Describe about your usual daily activity: For me most days consist of waking up early for my day-job, doing a quick check of the site to make sure all is well and doing a quick check on earnings. Throughout the day I try to keep an eye on the site, but it’s mostly on auto-pilot and in the hands of my moderators. In the evenings I go through all my email, resolve any issues that members might be having and process premium orders. Evenings are also when I do any maintenance or upgrades on the site.

Day job? : Yes, for the last 10 years my day job has been the IT Manager for all of our offices in the So.California area, but recently i have moved into our global-network management group, overseeing the private network of thousands of locations world wide. The company is one of, if not the largest company on the planet – making and selling everything from clothes-washing machines and movies, to jet-engines and nuclear power-plants..

Websites (Ordered by traffic): GrownUpGeek.com, Success.GrownUpGeek.com (my blog)

How many hours devoted to your work per day: 1 – 10

What was your first succesful website: GrownUpGeek.com

Highest visitor peak (don’t count traffic buying/link baiting): ~50,000/day; traffic from being on the front page of Digg in Aug 2006, another time from being talked-about on Leo Leporte’s national radio show.

Webmaster related forums/portals you visit: Digital Point, WebmasterWorld, BroadBandReports.com webmaster forums

Time to take a look at your main website: www.grownupgeek.com

Niche: help for “beginners” and novices

Describe it a bit: GrownUpGeek.com is a website where people can come to learn things. Initially it began as a place to learn about computers, internet and technology, but we have expanded it to include help on other topics such as Taxes, cooking, animals, and automobiles. We are a ’social’ website focusing on members helping each other. The website has been very successful, and has been published as an Adsense Success Story, used in the Adsense Support pages, featured in Kontera’s Presentations at BlogWorld, and also in Kontera’s press releases, among other places.
Where did the idea came to create such a site: I wanted a place where I could send people to answer common computer questions that I was getting asked all the time.

Avg Traffic: ~12,000 uniques/day

Main traffic sources: Organic Search

Best website referral: Digg.com

Revenue type: PPC, Premium Membership Fees, affiliate sales

Revenue sources:Adsense, Kontera, and Premium Fees account for 98% of all revenue

Avg Revenue: $80,000 in 2007; Average for 2008 so far is $8,500/month
Main marketing strategy you went for: “word of mouth” and anything else that is free

Sites you look up to: Markus at PlentyOfFish.com is my hero

Future Goals: Maintaing an upward trend in traffic, membership and earnings

A personal message for our visitors: Running a website for fun or profit can be fun and rewarding, but always remember to “do unto others as you would have others do unto you” and keep the internet a nice place by building a website that YOU would enjoy visiting and using. If you build quality websites you stand a much greater chance of being successful in the long-run. Treat your visitors/customers the way you would like to be treated, and remember that without them your website is nothing. Learn everything you can, keep at it, and don’t fear failure because it is one of the best ways to learn.

Coding
Going to programming, the website grabs the cheats by a crawler which makes the site’s value rise up, autopilot functions are indeed very good for a big website.

Doctype: < !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> – this makes me think, why not STRICT?! My coder codes only strict, of course some of the functions have to be made thru javascript, but it’s fine as long as it validates, so let’s see.
